Senate confirms Kasdin Miller Mitchell as federal judge for North Texas, 49–45
The U.S. Senate on September 17, 2026 confirmed Kasdin Miller Mitchell, of Texas, to be United States District Judge for the Northern District of Texas. The Senate confirmed her by a vote of 49 to 45.
The confirmation gives Mitchell a lifetime appointment to the federal trial court that covers the Dallas–Fort Worth region and much of North Texas. She fills the seat left by Barbara M. Lynn, who retired.
The vote fell largely along party lines. During floor debate, Democratic Senator Dick Durbin spoke against the nomination. Durbin said Mitchell's record demonstrates that she prioritizes corporate interests over people, and that in private practice she has represented Big Tech companies and industrial polluters. He said she represented the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association in the 2022 Supreme Court case New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, previously litigated against reproductive rights, and argued for gutting the Voting Rights Act in a brief she submitted in Shelby County v. Holder. Durbin also said she has strong ties to the Federalist Society and other right-wing organizations, and he asked his colleagues to oppose her.
