Senate confirms Keith Sonderling as Secretary of Labor, 47-41

September 30, 2026

The Senate on September 30, 2026, confirmed Keith Sonderling to be Secretary of Labor, voting 47 to 41 to approve his nomination. The records identify Keith Sonderling of Florida as the nominee for Secretary of Labor, succeeding Lori Chavez-DeRemer, who had resigned. His nomination was PN1129 in the 119th Congress.

The Secretary of Labor leads the U.S. Department of Labor, the federal agency responsible for labor and employment matters. Sonderling had previously been nominated and confirmed earlier in the 119th Congress to be Deputy Secretary of Labor — the department's second-ranking post — a nomination the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee reported favorably. For the Secretary of Labor nomination, the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee held a hearing on July 16 and ordered the nomination reported favorably on July 30; Senator Cassidy reported it without a printed report. On September 30, 2026, the Senate invoked cloture 53 to 47 and then confirmed Sonderling 47 to 41, Record Vote No. 256. The confirmation vote divided along party lines, with Republicans voting to confirm and Democrats voting against. Twelve senators did not vote; Senators Barrasso and Schumer announced that a number of senators from both parties were necessarily absent.

The Senate record of the September 30 proceeding contains no floor speeches debating the merits of the Sonderling nomination; the vote was taken after the presiding officer asked whether there was further debate and Sen. Bernie Moreno, managing the nomination, said he knew of no further debate.
