Mr. Biggs of Arizona (for himself, Mr. Higgins of Louisiana, Mr. Nehls, and Mr. Harris of Maryland) introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform
To amend the District of Columbia Home Rule Act to extend the emergency period during which the President may exercise control over the Metropolitan Police Department.
Section 1. Extension of emergency period
(a) In general
Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act (sec. 1–207.40, D.C. Official Code) is amended—
(1)
by striking thirty days
and inserting 180 days
each place it appears; and
(2)
in subsection (c), by striking thirty-day
and inserting 180-day
.
(b) Applicability to previously declared emergency
This Act, and the amendments made by this Act, shall apply with respect to an emergency declared by the President under section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act (sec. 1–207.40, D.C. Official Code) before the date of the enactment of this Act.
